Supplementing with the fatty acid conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) may help diabetics lower their weight and blood sugar levels, finds a study published in the Journal of Nutrition (2003, vol. 133: 257S-260S). Researchers from Ohio State University studied 21 people with adult-onset diabetes. Divided roughly in half, one group was given a daily supplement of the CLA isomer known as “10-12 isomer,” mixed with rumenic acid. The second group was given safflower oil supplement as a control. At the end of the eight-week trial, blood glucose levels had decreased in nine of the 11 people taking the CLA supplement, but only in two of the people taking the safflower supplement. The 10-12 isomer also reduced the levels of the hormone leptin, which is associated with fat levels in the body.
